Help! My dehumidifier is not working – what can I do?

At this time of year when the mercury drops below freezing we often get phone calls from customers saying that their dehumidifier is not working. The problem is usually that it is not collecting any water and yet they still get condensation on their windows.  Frustrating but there is very little that can be done.

A dehumidifier removes the excess moisture from the air but what you do not want the dehumidifier to do is to dry the air so much (below 30%rh) that you start to get dry skin, sore throats and static shocks.  So a dehumidifier does not dry the air down to this level but when the outside air temperature drops down below freezing you do not need much moisture in the air for condensation to form.

All you can do is to run your dehumidifier on it’s maximum setting which will lower the relative humidity further (to about 40%rh) and reduce the amount of condensation on the windows.  But it would be a waste of energy to reduce the relative humidity so low that the condensation is eliminated completely and no-one really wants to live in a home where static shocks are the norm and we suffer from constant sore throats and dry skin.

Thankfully in Britain these cold spares are rare and after a week or so we can get back to normal and the dehumidifier will once more have things under control.

    I purchased the Dry Arete® Two Dehumidifier, 25L about 5 weeks ago . It has been working fine and we have been emptying it daily sometimes twice a day . However the last two days it has been on it has not collected a single drop of water . We have cleaned the filter , switched it off and on and still nothing . It’s blowing out air but not collecting anything .

      Thank you for your purchase and question. It’s good to hear that the dehumidifier has been working well. Please check that the target humidity hasn’t been accidentally changed to a higher setting. Compare the actual humidity reading with the target setting to ensure there’s still a difference for the dehumidifier to work with.

      Additionally, colder temperatures can affect the amount of moisture in the air, meaning it may not be able to extract as much water if the environment is drier or cooler than usual. If you’re still having trouble, please give us a call or send us an email with more information.

  2. Hello,
    We purchased the 12L dehumidifier a week ago. Initially when plugged in it was at 79%, on smart mode it’s now down to 64% but after a week constant running it’s no where near the 55% target level. I’ve emptied the water tank at least once a day as it’s full. Will it ever reach the 55% target as otherwise it will be running 24/7?
    I have it positioned in the main bedroom next to the en-suite as this is where condensation builds up most in the bathroom. Any advice?

      To help you reach your 55% target, here are a few tips:

      Keep the Filter Clean: Make sure the filter is clean to maintain good airflow.
      Close Doors and Windows: Keeping doors and windows closed will help prevent additional moisture from entering the room.
      Maintain Temperature: Aim to keep the room temperature around 15°C for optimal performance.
      Give It Time: Sometimes it takes a little longer to stabilize the humidity, so patience is key.
      You might also consider closing the bedroom door to help control humidity in that specific area before relocating the unit to a more central location in your home for broader coverage.

  3. Hello.

    I just bought my MeacoDry Arete® One 10L Dehumidifier / Air Purifier yesterday and when put on laundry mode, it won’t go below 65. It hasn’t changed for hours. I had it plugged in an hour before doing the laundry and the indicator showed 55. There is no way doing the laundry caused this much humidity. Any idea why the indicator is not going any lower?

      Thank you for your enquiry regarding relative humidity readings during laundry mode.

      It’s possible that the humidity level in your space is indeed higher than expected, or there may be other factors affecting performance, such as airflow or room size.

      If the humidity doesn’t decrease after the 6 hour laundry time, try cleaning the filter, also try the dehumidifier in another location to observe changes in the readings, if still no change in reading get in touch with our customer service team who can investigate.

  4. Hi,
    I bought meaco arete two 20L 2 days ago. I
    have used smart mode and even laundry mode. Whilst my humidity levels are high initially in the 70s. I cannot seem to get below 55% despite selecting target of 40%. I have emptied the water tank despite this I am stuck with humidity levels at 55%. I have therm pro portable temperature and humidity checking device and verified above.

    Please advice

      Thank you for your enquiry regarding why won’t your dehumidifier go below 55% in two days.

      Using a dehumidifier for 2 days to achieve your set target can be a little optimistic, unless the space is very small like a bedroom where this should be possible. Emptying the tank is always a positive indication of successful operation and results, it seems in two days your unit has reduced the humidity of the space you are using it in. if the dehumidifier is for a home and general use, there is no need to have air at home drier than 50/55%rh – museums and art galleries protect artifacts and collections from damp and mould at 55%rh – so setting a dehumidifier target to lower than this is a waste of electricity.

      But that is not likely to be why you are not getting below 55%rh. Firstly why would you want to achieve lower because 50-55%rh is the correct level to be at for a home? Secondly all of the time the dehumidifier is taking moisture out of the air you are adding it back in from breathing, cooking, drying laundry, showering and bathing etc. So there is a constant battle going on. In addition to this as you dry the air then the contents of the house start to dry and they add more moisture into the air. So the issue in your initial question is not likely to be anything other than the factors I have listed above.

      Drying a home out takes a couple of weeks, you are better off leaving it in a central location, keeping the internal doors open and letting it run. It will react as it needs to and you will see a massive difference over the course of the coming weeks.

  5. Hi, my new Meaco Arete Two 20l is not switching from Night Mode to Smart Humidity Mode when using the app. Is that normal? Isn’t that the porpoise for using an app?

      Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Meaco app. The change you are looking to make is possible and available, following the instructions, click Night Mode again to take it out of night mode (there is an “i” next to night mode which indicates that).

  6. My MECO dry ARETE de humidifier is less than 6months old . Developed a fault. Referred to Meaco customer services over a week ago still awaiting a response. So much for their 72 hour response time but will persist as my dehumidifier is not operating. But not impressed!!

  7. Hi – I have a 12L Meaco and have set to 55% but it never really get to any lower than 56 so never turns off
    I have had it for about 2 weeks – is this normal!? I can’t have it running 24/7 due to electricity but it’s just never getting to the desired humidity (or below)

      It will reach the target and below, it just requires more time to do so. On the other hand, if you are happy with humidity levels, you can set the target to 60% and it should then turn off when it reaches around 57%.

      1. Hello. Is it normal for the dehumidifing indicator to turn off before the desired level is reached? Eg. if using SL it turns off at 60? But still has 3hrs to go.

          Thank you for your enquiry. Selecting smart laundry mode will always result to the dehumidifier running in smart laundry mode for 6 hours and only after 6 hours the dehumidifier will turn off. During this time frame, the only reason it stops will be whereby the tank has reached its full capacity and needs emptying. The only other reason is whereby the dehumidifier reaches a humidity level of 32%rh before the 6 hours is up, the compressor will turn
          off to stop the air from becoming too dry, but the fan will continue to run. The dehumidifying indicator will turn off. If the relative humidity increases to 38%rh the compressor will turn back on. It will do this until the 6-hour timer is up.

          If none of these are the reason for your unit turning off, please get in touch with our customer service team as it could be a defects of the product.
