Help! My dehumidifier is not working – what can I do?

At this time of year when the mercury drops below freezing we often get phone calls from customers saying that their dehumidifier is not working. The problem is usually that it is not collecting any water and yet they still get condensation on their windows.  Frustrating but there is very little that can be done.

A dehumidifier removes the excess moisture from the air but what you do not want the dehumidifier to do is to dry the air so much (below 30%rh) that you start to get dry skin, sore throats and static shocks.  So a dehumidifier does not dry the air down to this level but when the outside air temperature drops down below freezing you do not need much moisture in the air for condensation to form.

All you can do is to run your dehumidifier on it’s maximum setting which will lower the relative humidity further (to about 40%rh) and reduce the amount of condensation on the windows.  But it would be a waste of energy to reduce the relative humidity so low that the condensation is eliminated completely and no-one really wants to live in a home where static shocks are the norm and we suffer from constant sore throats and dry skin.

Thankfully in Britain these cold spares are rare and after a week or so we can get back to normal and the dehumidifier will once more have things under control.

  1. having just purchased (1 week old) an Arete One i’m very concerned about many reports of control panel buttons failure!
it seems there is a design or component failure that is systemic rather than just a small percentage of units.
obviously the warranty gives a bit of piece of mind but many report having replacement unit after replacement unit and many failures.
so why hasn’t Meaco/chinese maker got on top of this issue? is the entire ‘black top’ range effected? maybe you fixed it in the new ‘Two’ model and/or the new ‘One – silver top’?
given it seems a component/design/manufacturing fault why hasn’t Meaco done a recall and fix? i guess that would cost too much money obviously but still replacing units must be considerable cost!
i guess Meaco just hope majority would have issue occur before the 5yrs is up!
not knocking Meaco as have 2 machines now (had an ABC dry for 3+yrs) and now the Arete
just concerned having just shelled out a considerable amount for the new Arete machine
i suppose what i was wondering is, if not all are affected than can i tell if my machine is likely to be based on unit batch/serial number/manufacture date…?

    1. Dave,

Thank you for your purchase and your question. Don’t worry, there are no such problems and your unit will be fine. We sell three times as many dehumidifiers as anybody else in the whole of Europe, and it is easy for such things on social media to seem like a major issue because of our massive volumes. But there is nothing for you to be concerned about, and your machine will be fine.

Hope this helps to put your mind at ease.

(It should be noted that where possible, we also repair outside of warranty free of charge as well)

      Chris
