One of the most popular features on our website is the ability of customers to ask a question about a particular dehumidifier. We gets lots of questions from customers every single day. Occasionally I post the questions and answers here so that more people can see the answers. Today’s batch cover;
-
Which dehumidifier is best for a conservatory?
-
Does the desiccant need to be replaced on a DD8L?
-
Does the filter need to be changed on the DD8L?
-
Are there any consumables on the DD8L?
-
Can the Meaco 20L be used with an extension lead?
-
What do the symbols mean on the Meaco 10L?
Using a dehumidifier in a conservatory
Conservatories tend to suffer from a lot of condensation because they use glass for their walls and ceiling which means that the surfaces are colder and much closer to the outside temperature than a normal brick wall would be. At night temperatures drop faster in a conservatory because of the lack of insulation and condensation forms on the glass.
Conservatories tend to be next to kitchens and/or become a convenient location for drying washing and these factors will increase the amount of moisture in the air.
The correct dehumidifier to use in a conservatory is one that is used to temperatures below 16°C because of that overnight drop in temperature so it has to be a desiccant dehumidifier because the temperature in winter is likely to spend most of its time overnight well below 10°C.
So the best dehumidifier for a conservatory would be the Meaco DD8L or the Meaco DD8L Junior.
Do you replace the desiccant on the DD8L?
The simple answer is no – the desiccant will be good for the life of the dehumidifier.
Does the filter need to be changed on the DD8L?
No – just vacuum it on a regular basis (every week or so please).
Are there any consumables on the DD8L?
No.
Can the Meaco 20L be used with an extension lead?
Yes – as long as the extension lead is in good working order (which applies to any electrical appliance really).
What do the symbols on the Meaco 10L mean?
On the left from top to bottom we have;
Power
Tank full
Defrost mode
On the right from top to bottom we have the humidistat set points
Laundry mode – which runs continuously
40%rh
60%rh
80%rh
If you have any dehumidifier questions then please feel free to post them via the product page or to email myself directly via askaquestion@meaco.com.

My 5 year old Meaco has started to beep, 50 is flashing along with the water droplet sign, is it dead
Deep,
Which model do you have please? have you tried unplugging it for an hour and then plugging it back in?
Chris
Hello,
My Meaco 20L is working fine but the water is only coming out from the rear drain instead of filling the tank. I have not connected any hose pipe on the rear but it still gets the water only through rear side and fails to fill the tank.
Please could you let me know what could be the problem?
Many thanks
If you have the 20L Low energy then this means that the bung has been removed at the rear.
Chris
Hi I bought a 20L Meaco. First time I switched it on all worked as per the manual.
When we went to bed we set it to sleep mode. This morning we are unable to get it out of sleep mode.
I unplugged it, I noticed the child lock was on and disabled it. All the lights that were on yesterday are off and I cannot get them back on.
Please help
Erna,
Thank you for your purchase, to remove it from sleep mode please press the sleep button twice, the humidistat button will then light and the display will turn on.

Hi I have the meaco 20L low energy. It’s on my landing, house is warm yet it’s blowing out cold air. I’ve also noticed that is not filling up with much water even when in a room with laundry and windows are still getting condensation? Is there a fault. Thanks
Melissa,
That sounds normal.
The machine cannot cool the air, the air that comes out is around 1 to 2°C warmer than room temperature. But, because the air is moving, it feels warmer. With the extreme cold conditions that we have at the moment you will have a lower relative humidity in the house, so less water is collected, but the windows will be very cold, so you still get condensation.

Hello I have a 20l meaco ABC dehumidifier for 2 years now. Just lately I am getting a bad musty smell from it when I turn it on I have cleaned the dust filter is there something else I need to do to prevent the musty smell?
Orla,
The more you run a machine the less likely mould growth is. I would run it on Laundry to clean it through for several days and run it consistently afterwards.
Chris
Hi Chris.
I did unplug it, let it sit a while and plugged it onto a different outlet. Apparently it reset because it functioned normally after that.
Thanks!
Kate
Meaco 10L – the dehumidifier is running but the red light for air drying laundry is blinking, and pushing the settings button does not switch to any other settings. Filter is clean and room temp 19-20°C.
Have any ideas what’s going on? Any suggestions or help massively appreciated.

I have just purchased a Meaco 20L dehumidifier. I’ve collected it and got it home, plugged it in after 30 mins and pressed the on/off button on the top. It beeped once but no LED came on. Am I doing something wrong or is it faulty?
You will be holding your finger on the power button for too long.
I’ve recently purchased the 10L Meaco dehumidifier. I would like to know if I can run the machine using an extension cord. Power sockets in my flat are limited, so an extension cord is necessary for most of my appliances. Please note the extension lead is switched on and off from the mains, not individual switches on the cord itself. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Thank you for your purchase Ashley, you can definitely use an extension lead as long as it is in good condition and safe. Please always turn the dehumidifier off via it’s control panel.
Hope this helps.
Chris
I think my laundry function is not working anymore after a while. I turn the laundry function on, works for a litlle while, warm air comes out but then only cold air comes out and the dehumidifiying indicator is off.
The air can feel cold if the room temperature is lower because the air is moving. But the machine does not have a cooling function. If you are collecting water then you are fine.
I have been using a meaco ABC 12 for 7 weeks now. It’s been working fine and reduced the humidity down to 55 as we had set it. In the last week the auto defrost light keeps coming on at least once or twice an hour. The temperature is around 21° in our house. Is this normal?
Yes, as long as the dehumidifier is still collecting water throughout the day then there is nothing to worry about. If there is a fault then an error code will appear on the display.
Hi – I have just bought a Meaco Arete 20 Litre Premium Low Energy Dehumidifier and don’t notice any discernible reduction in fan speed or noise when I put it into night mode. Should this be audible instantly or does it take a while?
Paul,
You have mixed up two model names there, if you have Arete then when you press the Night Mode button the lights go out. If the humidity level is already within 15% of the target then it will already be in low fan speed and therefore there will be no change in noise level.
Chris
I have recently purchased a meaco abc20lt dehumidifier. It has been running perfectly until 2 day’s ago. I have set the target humidity at 50 but it keeps running until it gets to 45. I have checked the target humidity and it shows 50. What can I do. Thanks in advance.
Victor,
You should see it settle down and turn off at 46 as it should do. If the reading of 45 is from a third party hygrometer rather than the dehumidifier then that will be the explanation. Longer term dust on the return air sensor can cause this issue. If you have any concerns then please do call us on 01483 234900.
Chris
Why dkes tge defrost light on my 10L humidifier keeps flashing despite being in a heated corridor, and does it turn off automatically? Do i have to do something? Help please. Thank you.
It can happen at any temperature from around 18°C down and is perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about and you can just ignore it and let it do it’s thing.
Chris
I’ve had my meaco ABC 12l dehumidifier for 3weeks and up till now it has worked fine ,but today it keeps turning itself off. It goes from the high fan speed,to the low and then off and it doesn’t come back on. I’ve emptied the water container, looked at the filter which is clean. What next?
Sue,
Thank you for your purchase. It sounds as though it has reached it’s target humidity and is waiting for the humidity to go back up. You can check this by pressing the button under the display, that will tell you what your target is and if this is above the room humidity then that explains why it is off. If you are concerned then please do call the office on 01483 234900 Monday to Friday.

Hi Chris, l have just purchases the Meaco 20L and put it on night mode last night but the lights didn’t go off. The fan slowed down but lights stayed on. Any suggestions?
Jane,
Please try again but press the Night Mode button just once and then leave it.
Chris
What does code LC mean on the display for 10Ltr basic dehumidifier please as it has stopped running. And can you post the guide here please?
You have child lock turned on. Here is a copy and paste from the manual for you.
To activate child lock hold the fan speed button down for two seconds. ‘LC’ will appear on the display for 5 seconds and then the display will change back to the relative humidity level of the environment. Whilst child lock is on, the settings cannot be changed. To deactivate child lock hold the fan speed button down for two seconds – the dehumidifier will beep once. If you are unable to remove child lock using the fan speed button, unplug the dehumidifier for 40 minutes.
Thanks Chris, I switched it off at the plug and switched it back on again. Ha ha. But good to know what LC means and how it happened. I will make note.
Hi, I’ve had my meaco abc 10l now for 2 weeks it’s been working fantastically but just recently the “defrost/bell” light is constantly on. I kept the machine off for a complete day and also hoovered filter to see if that helped but unfortunately not .
Any help greatly appreciated
Adam,
Defrost is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. Don’t turn the machine off, just let it run, the light can indicate defrost at any temperature from around 18°C downwards.
