Some of your dehumidifier questions answered

One of the most popular features on our website is the ability of customers to ask a question about a particular dehumidifier. We gets lots of questions from customers every single day. Occasionally I post the questions and answers here so that more people can see the answers. Today’s batch cover;

  • Which dehumidifier is best for a conservatory?
  • Does the desiccant need to be replaced on a DD8L?
  • Does the filter need to be changed on the DD8L?
  • Are there any consumables on the DD8L?
  • Can the Meaco 20L be used with an extension lead?
  • What do the symbols mean on the Meaco 10L?

Using a dehumidifier in a conservatory

Conservatories tend to suffer from a lot of condensation because they use glass for their walls and ceiling which means that the surfaces are colder and much closer to the outside temperature than a normal brick wall would be. At night temperatures drop faster in a conservatory because of the lack of insulation and condensation forms on the glass.

Conservatories tend to be next to kitchens and/or become a convenient location for drying washing and these factors will increase the amount of moisture in the air.

The correct dehumidifier to use in a conservatory is one that is used to temperatures below 16°C because of that overnight drop in temperature so it has to be a desiccant dehumidifier because the temperature in winter is likely to spend most of its time overnight well below 10°C.

So the best dehumidifier for a conservatory would be the Meaco DD8L or the Meaco DD8L Junior.

Do you replace the desiccant on the DD8L?

The simple answer is no – the desiccant will be good for the life of the dehumidifier.

Does the filter need to be changed on the DD8L?

No – just vacuum it on a regular basis (every week or so please).

Are there any consumables on the DD8L?

No.

Can the Meaco 20L be used with an extension lead?

Yes – as long as the extension lead is in good working order (which applies to any electrical appliance really).

What do the symbols on the Meaco 10L mean?

On the left from top to bottom we have;

Power
Tank full
Defrost mode

On the right from top to bottom we have the humidistat set points

Laundry mode – which runs continuously
40%rh
60%rh
80%rh

  1. Occasionally Lee when I turn off my Zambezi which I’ve had for about a month it does not turn off after 10 minutes or so it remains on. What am I doing wrong?

    1. Rick,

Thank you for your purchase and your email. Any desiccant needs to run the fan when you turn it off to cool down, this should last for a couple of minutes. If you are sure that it is going on for longer then the filter probably needs a clean.

  2. Hi
    My meaco abc 12l
Stopped working, on/off button stopped working, so i started to plug plug out to turn off and plugged back in to turn on.
Now completely stopped, no lights on, when plugging in, it just bleeps.
    Please help, thank you

  3. I have a meaco dehumidifier 10L it is somehow stuck on child lock (LC) and even following the reset instructions- unplug for 40 Seconds. It’s still stuck on. Can anyone help undo this?

      1. we have recently brought the MeacoDry arete one 20l. reading the instruction it meant to be really quiet in night mode. yet when I push the night button the lights shut off but the fan is still as noisy as in day.

        1. Tash,

Thank you for your message. The Arete One models have two fan speeds, and Night Mode operates at the lower fan speed to ensure quieter operation. If you’re not noticing a difference in noise, it’s likely because the unit is already running at the lower fan speed when you activate Night Mode.

To experience the difference between the two fan speeds, try selecting Laundry Mode, which will engage the higher fan speed, and you should hear a noticeable increase in noise.

Let me know if you need further clarification or assistance, otherwise, I hope this helps!

    1. Hi
My meaco dehumidifier (which I’ve had for several years) now smells of plastic, a new development. Should I be worried?

  4. I have a new Meaco arête 25L. It has reached the target humidity (50%) but is not automatically turning off. Is this normal?

    1. That is a very personal choice, for me I cannot stand the tick of watch at night, others need some white noise. With the DD8L you have something that is very quiet, and it is just a steady fan noise. So many people do use them in a bedroom. I prefer to have it running on the landing and I leave the bedroom door open during the day and closed at night, for more or less the same result.

  5. Hi, I’ve have a Meaco ABC dehumidifier for several years. Recently it has started beeping and turning itself off and the water tank full indicator light comes on. The problem is that the tank has hardly any water in it. Your help would be appreciated.

    1. Helen,

First thing to do is check that the float is not stuck and can move freely. If that does not solve it, make sure that it is the water full indicator and then email a photo of the serial number and the display to customerservice AT meaco.com.

  6. Hi there
I have the meaco 25l platinum low energy dehumidifier and have noticed in winter every year that it makes a crackling noise, like ice being walked on. My guesses it must be part of its defrosting mode but there is never a defrosting mode symbol present.

    Thanks

    1. It is probably the compressor cycling. As long as the machine is collecting water and you are not seeing an error code on the display then there is nothing to worry about.

  7. I’ve had my meacodry for a day and it’s drunk quite a bit of water – my question is this, is the air that it blows out supposed to be cold? I thought it would be warm

  8. Hi, I have the Maeco 12l Low Energy Dehumidifier.
It’s currently set at 55rh target and according to the the display the current rh is 34, yet it carries on running.
Why goes it not switch itself off?
    Thank you,
    Anne

    1. Anne,

Press the button under the display once to check the set point, it might have been adjusted off 50%rh. After that I would clean the filter and blow the sensor behind the filter with a hairdryer.

  9. Hi, when I went to clean the filter on my MeacoDry ABC 12L is showing frost/ice (completely frosted/iced up) on the element surface but has not gone into defrost mode at all (no light flashing) , should I be worried that the unit is faulty ?? Can this make the unit malfunction and be fire hazard???

    1. Chris,

The machine will not be a fire hazard, that is 100% certain. Frosting is fine for dehumidification, ice is more of an issue. Keep the filter clean and if it is being used in a space below 5°C then turn it off until the space warms up. Otherwise continue to use it and call us on 01483 234900 if the build up is more solid ice than frost.
