My dehumidifier does not turn off – is this normal?

This is the most common question that we are getting at the moment.  Phone call after phone call telling us that their dehumidifier never seems to turn off and it is collecting lots and lots of water.  Is this normal people ask us?

The answer is yes.

The Explanation – Why it’s normal.

The dehumidifiers have a built in humidistat that measures the temperature and relative humidity of the room and tells the dehumidifier whether to sleep or dehumidify.  If you have a house that has never had a dehumidifier in it before then the dehumidifier will be running flat out for around two to four weeks while it dries out all of the air in the house and then the organic material in the house (wood, clothing, furniture, paper, books etc.) releases all of the moisture into the air that they have been holding on to, giving the dehumidifier more work to do.

As well as the above you are also putting moisture into the air each day (bathing, showering, cooking, breathing etc.) and this slows down the process of getting to a point whereby the humidity is low enough for the dehumidifier to turn off for a rest.

Then there is the weather, if it is raining a lot then the dehumidifier will run for longer.  When it has caught up and brought things under control you will find that your dehumidifier turns off and then you will settle into a cycle of on/off/on/off as required.

After all you bought the dehumidifier to dry your house and that is exactly what it is doing for you.  So don’t be too hard on your poor old dehumidifier!

  1. I have MeacoDry Arete One 12L.
I really like this dehumidifier but it has one annoying problem.
How to recreate: I set the target to 50 and then it goes to 47, then turns off completely – no fan, no sound. Leave it for long enough (usually 1-3 days, rare occasions up to 7 days) and then the fan no longer turns off even if humidity is ≥ 3% below the target. Let me explain.
What in this case always turns off is the compressor. But most of the time fan keeps going for hours, days (forever) even if target is 50 and current humidity is something like 45 or less. In this scenario the only thing that temporarily helps is unplugging it from the mains and plugging it back in. Then it runs for like 10 minutes and completely turns off, then turns on periodically every 30 mins to check humidity – this is how it is supposed to work. But it works like that only for 1-3 days until I need to “reset” by unplugging and plugging back in. Like it forgets to switch off the fan after some time being on. No matter what target I set, the 3% rule only works for limited time. I even tested it with very high target which the room never reaches in the summer. It seems to me like a defect. I noticed some other people having same issue. It acted this way since purchase. Are you aware of this problem?

    1. Ignas,

Thank you for sharing your detailed message with the MeacoDry Arete One 12L. I’m glad to hear you like the dehumidifier overall.

While the compressor should turn off at -3% the target humidity, that is only if the humidity remains there and is stable at that level. From what you’ve described, it does sound like there might be a problem with the operation.

We want to help resolve this for you. I recommend reaching out to our customer support team directly, as they can provide specific troubleshooting steps or assist you further if a repair is necessary.

      I hope that helps,
      Omar@Meaco.
