Tips to improve indoor air pollution

Spring and Summer seasons can trigger the onset of many allergies due to pollen in the air, but there is growing evidence, and a deeper understanding, of how even indoor air pollution in general can be detrimental to the health of the nation.

Pollution is most obvious in large cities, along busy roads and in industrial areas but there are also many sources of pollutants that we bring into our own home.  Smoking, faulty boilers, chemicals that are given off by new furniture, perfumes, air fresheners and candles, paints and cleaning products (all commonly known as VOCs), dust mites that live in our beds, mould spores, and dander from family pets can all trigger allergic reactions.

According to Clean Air Day only 36% of adults are aware of the effects of indoor air pollution on their health, whilst 85% of UK adults know the ill-effects of outdoor pollution. Indoor air quality can be as much as five times more polluted than being outdoors.

Here are some simple steps you can take, and products to invest in, to improve the indoor air pollution around you:

Spring clean

Thoroughly clean your house from top to bottom on a regular basis to remove and reduce dust mites. If you are using various cleaning products, open windows and make sure your home is well ventilated. It’s worth helping the environment by switching your go-to cleaning products with fragrance-free, naturally-scented, eco-friendly products and avoiding the use of aerosols.

Remove mould

Ensure the bathroom and kitchen have good ventilation to remove excess moisture to avoid damp and mould. Using a dehumidifier, such as the DD8L Zambezi to reduce damp will also reduce the likelihood of mould spores and dust mites.

Clean the air

Actioning all the above steps, together with using an air purifier, will provide a more effective way of reducing and removing indoor air pollution, including airborne particles, dust, humidity and other gases.
