Causes of condensation in the home – a video guide

Condensation is one of the main reasons that homeowners buy dehumidifiers. And we get lots of questions asking about the causes of condensation in their property. That’s why we’ve made this short video. It covers the main activities in your home that can cause condensation and describes the reasons why condensation could be worse in some areas of your property than in others.

A quick recap on condensation and its causes

So, we’ve heard that condensation is common in most properties. The main causes of condensation are activities that increase the moisture in the air. These include:

  • Showering and bathing
  • Cooking
  • Drying laundry
  • The weather

Condensation is often apparent in the colder rooms in your home. These are the rooms with more external walls, or that face north and therefore get less sun. So you’re likely to notice condensation on the windows, doors and even the walls of these rooms. People with unheated conservatories will already know that condensation on the double glazing is common.

Why is it important to reduce condensation and damp?

Condensation and damp are hazardous both to your health and to the fabric of your building. Whilst you can increase ventilation to help manage condensation, or look at managing damp by damp proofing, the thing you really need to do is reduce the moisture in the air. This will have an immediate effect on the levels of condensation in your home.

Using a dehumidifier to remove condensation in your property

A good dehumidifier is the perfect way to remove moisture from the air and create a drier and healthier environment in your home. As we say in the video, the moisture in the air is usually similar throughout your home – it’s just that you can see its effects in the colder areas. So position your dehumidifier somewhere central and it will draw in the air, extract the moisture and then all you need to do is empty the tank.

The cost of running a dehumidifier is much lower than you think, and you could end up saving money because it will take less energy to heat your home. That’s because when you have a high level of humidity, it takes more effort for your heating to warm your home – it’s warming a lot of water particles too. Instead, your drier air will be easier to warm and you’ll need to run your heating for less time and at a lower temperature.
