Dehumidifier advice for first timers

By Caitlin Smith of Meaco Choosing a dehumidifier doesn’t have to be a daunting process. A few simple steps will ensure you choose the correct one for the desired job. From someone who knew nothing about dehumidifiers before joining Meaco, I can truly say that they are not as scary as I first thought. Prior to joining Meaco I worked in the pub and restaurant business and had various jobs working with children of all ages in the UK and America. The word dehumidify was not something I was familiar with and not a market I ever thought I would find myself working in. So, to take the plunge into an unknown world was nerve-wracking. The extent of my knowledge of these products was that they removed humidity from the air. I can completely relate to anyone who is thinking of buying one for the first time but is unsure of where to start. With a little understanding and research, all can become clear, and in my experience, I now understand something I knew nothing about a short time ago. For all you first timers out there, here are a few tips to help you along the way when choosing your new unit.

Start with the basics for dehumidifiers

How many bedrooms does your property have? How many people live in the property? What is the average temperature, at its coldest? You answer these questions, and you can choose the perfect tool for the job.

Number of occupants

The number of people in the property will greatly impact the amount of humidity created. People produce moisture, which leads to humidity. The more people there are, the more washing, showering, cooking, talking and breathing there is. This will add to the humidity in the atmosphere and in the property. With two or three people in a home, the 10L or 12L would be suitable. In a larger family, the 12L or 20L will be needed.

Household temperature

I often get asked if temperature matters. Yes, it does. Compressor units run on a refrigerant. So just like a fridge if they get too cold, they go into defrost. While this isn’t a bad thing, and the units will do this cycle from time to time, you don’t want to spend your money on a machine that will defrost more then it will dehumidify. If it is going to be used in a space where the temperature goes below 15 degrees centigrade, a desiccant variety will be better. These are particularly good for a boat, shed or garage. Desiccant models have an internal heating system, so they can function far better in colder temperatures. There are exceptions, as the 20L and 25L machines can cope in temperatures as low as 10 degrees.

Easy to use dehumidifiers

One of the great things about Meaco dehumidifiers is that they all work in a similar way. They can be set on a timer, used to help dry laundry and be programmed to reach the desired humidity level that you set. So, you see, dehumidifiers really aren’t that scary. It really comes down to its application, setting and what you what from the unit itself. Answer these questions and you will make the correct choice. If you find you need help, or just want a bit more information about our range, then our website has a vast amount of information on there. Each product description gives an idea of suitability based on the size of the property and the number of people in the household. The best part about deciding on the right one for you is the Meaco customer service team that can help you make that decision. They can point you in the right direction and give you clear guidance on which model would be most suitable for you. Best wishes, Caitlin

  1. Hi yesterday I took delivery of a Meaco 25l dehumidifier.
Prior to this I borrowed one off my friend as when we had the big freeze last week and then on Monday the weather shot up to 12 degrees centigrade plus and i got condensation in my garage. All my food boxes were wet and bottles of drinks etc .The first dehumidifier which was of a different brand cleaned up the initial issue in about 36 hours . And everything was bone dry. I then plugged in the Meaco one and it’s a mighty powerful machine however even though everything is bone dry it is still giving readings of 80 % and collecting a small amount of water. The garage is about 6 meters long and 3 meters wide and the machine is in the middle of the garage on the concrete floor placed on top of a rubber mat. I run a fridge freezer in the garage which has never given me any issues whatsoever and a tumble dryer that is condensed not vented. I’m just worried if I’m doing something wrong. The garage is in the middle of the floor with it’s exhaust fan facing the big main closed garage door and the filter side Is facing My shelving which has plenty of space between the shelves and machine as I said am I doing something wrong ?
I shall look forward to hearing from you
    Kind Regards

    1. Sean,

That is all fine. What will be happening is that the walls, floors and anything organic in the garage (boxes etc) will be slowly releasing moisture, combined with the rain that we are now having, this will slowly keep the humidity up as the dehumidifier reduces it. The dehumidifier will get on top of it, but once the air has had that initial drying out (which you did with the other machine), the organic material starts to release moisture and then these things take time and you have to look at a few weeks of drying and then keeping on top of things, rather than an initial burst.
