Ask a question – What is the hose in the dehumidifier’s tank for?

We are asked lots of questions via our ‘Ask a Question’ buttons on a daily basis and we answer each one in turn in as much detail as possible.  But it has struck me that a lot of the questions are very similar, so in order to help as many people as possible solve their dehumidifier questions we are going to publish the answers to the most popular questions here as well.

Today’s question comes from Bill and is about the hose that comes in the tank;

‘I have bought a Meaco 10L but what is the hose in the dehumidifier’s tank for?

Bill,

Thank you for buying a Meaco dehumidifier.  The hose is only necessary if you want the dehumidifier to drain the water away continuously instead of using the internal bucket.  If you are using it in your house then you are more than likely to be using the bucket.  The hose would commonly be used if you were using the dehumidifier in an unattended application like a garage, caravan, holiday home boat etc.

Hope this helps.

Chris

  1. Dear Meaco/Chris
I am having the same issue as Stef with a Meaco DD8L bought last winter. Some water is definitely going down the tube (I have watched it flow) but some is also collecting in the internal bucket sufficient to turn the unit off after about 8-10 days. I don’t recall having the same problem after lockdown last March (once I could get back to the boat; the boatyard had been looking after it during lockdown but didn’t mention any issues with the unit then). I only have about 15″ of hose attached to the drain port, as the unit is sitting next to the galley sink. So my question is, would drilling a hole in the tube as per your response to Stef apply equally to my problem?
And my brother’s Meaco is doing the same too!

    1. Keith,

Water will always flow downhill unless something blocks it, this will either be a build up of dirt internally forcing the water to go down the safety overflow rather than the hose, or an air pressure blockage. The latter happens because the flow of water from a dehumidifier will never be fast enough to build up enough pressure in the hose. Inserting the hole in the top of the hose balances out the air pressure.

So inserting a hole in the top of the hose is always a good starting point. Do that and see how it goes, if it does not work then it will be dirt in the machine.

  2. I have the hose attached for continuous drainage but it still serious into the tank and shuts off when full. How can I stop the attachment from leaking. I’ve tried everything, tying it with a cable tie etc but the plastic nozzle and tube is so smooth that the water still drips out. It’s very annoying

    1. Stef,

The most likely issue here is some form of blockage so the water backs up the hose and goes into the tank via the overflow. You can check as follows.

Hose not going downhill, the dehumidifier must be higher than the drain.
      Hose kinked or blocked
Too much spare hose curling around in the bath or sink stopping the water from flowing away.
If it is not one of these then it might well be down to negative air pressure stopping the water from flowing freely. To counter act this please make a 4mm diameter hole in the top of the hose 30mm down the tube from the spout. This will allow air into the top of the tube and will balance out the air pressure, the water will then run freely.

      Hope this helps.

      1. Hi do you mean make a hole at the top of the tube bar the dehumidifier? Mine is filling the bucket and not draining down the tube….thanks David

        1. David,

By making a 4mm hole in the top of the drain hose around 30mm from the spout then air will come into the hose at that point and this will help the water to flow by balancing out the air pressure. The problem is that water sometimes does not come out of the hose very fast so it does not build up enough of a head to come out of the spout.

Alternatively you could have a physical blockage from dirt in the spout.

          1. I have a meaco arete one 25l
Where is the continuous drainage port you attach the hose to please its not explanatry

          2. Nigel,

Thank you for your purchase. The continuous drain hole is on the rear of the machine. Remove the bung to gain access. From the front remove the bucket and then you can remove the drip cover from the spout and push the hose on. reinsert the bucket and you are good to go.
