How to keep your house cool in a heatwave

In the UK, we love a bit of sun and warmth, but a long-lasting heatwave can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. So it’s important to know how to keep your house cool. In a heatwave, your home can become an unpleasant place to be, and you can find it difficult to sleep and to concentrate. Let’s look at some ways you can keep your house cool in summer temperatures.

There are actually loads of ways you can keep yourself and your home cool in these conditions. Some of them are quick, easy fixes and some require a bit of thought and investment. As it becomes more likely that the UK’s weather will be more extreme, you’ll need to think about how you can manage your home environment to cope with more regular and hotter periods.

We have seen heatwaves the past few years and 2023 might not be any different. That’s why we’ve come up with some tips on what you can do to help yourself keep you and your family cool!

Quick Fixes To Cool Your Home And Yourself

Use a cold water bottle. This is just a case of taking your hot water bottle, filling it with water and putting it in the freezer before you go to bed. You’ve then got a ready-made ice pack that can help to cool you down overnight and sleep in the heat and with no extra costs at all.

Close blinds and curtains. Your home heats up because the sun shines through your windows and heats the air. It may be annoying to stop the lovely sun flooding your home, but it will help to regulate the air temperature inside. Close windows, blinds and curtains – especially in the parts of your house where the sun comes in at its warmest – south-facing windows. Once the sun has set, you can open the windows and let the air circulate – one of the easiest ways how to keep your house cool in a heatwave.

Take warm showers – this is a quick way to get some relief from the heat yourself before going to bed, rather than keeping your home cool. Warm showers will help you relax and help cool your body naturally, as a cold shower will push blood to your skin to warm you up.

Small Investments To Keep Your Home Cool

Buy a fan. Everyone knows that as soon as the sun comes out for a couple of days, you can’t find a fan anyway. So get ahead of the game and buy a good quality fan now. Look for fans that get good reviews and preferable ones that have timers so that you can set them to work when you need them to – perhaps even to come on an hour before you get home from work so your home is cool when you arrive.

If you want a fan for your bedroom, make sure you look for something that works quietly – lots of fans are incredibly noisy and that doesn’t help with sleep quality at all, so put this on your checklist. Meaco fans have QuietMark awards and are designed to operate incredibly quietly so they don’t disturb you.

Check windows and doors. If your windows and doors are poorly fitted, they can let in the heat in summer exactly the same was as the let in the cold in the winter. By using window and door insulation or closing up any gaps, you can keep your house cooler with not a lot of extra effort.

Ceiling fans. These are a popular option for keeping homes cool in the summer, particularly in bedrooms. But they can be energy intensive and they can also be very noisy. Just like standard fans, check out the noise levels and efficiency before you buy.

  1. I have just ordered my fourth Meaco fan. I have two 1056 and one 1065. My new 1056 will be delivered tomorrow…free p&p next day delivery and free storage bag a bonus! My opinion is that it’s worth spending a little extra and getting the 1056. My only complaint with the smaller one is that the usb plug seems a little fragile…for an extra few pounds you can get the bigger fan so a no brainier for me. I have them around the house and my grandchildren are visiting for the school holidays so will be pleased they have one for their room!
Nothing compares with the level of quietness and efficiency in my opinion. Maybe a considered purchase but with it in this warm humid weather we are having and with more summers like this forecast a great investment. I bought my first one three years ago and no issues with it. As mentioned the smaller one with the usb plug … I returned one as it arrived and the plug was broken inside.

  2. After having bought the Meaco fan 2 years ago and loving it I took a giant step up to a Meaco air con unit last year. Although the smallest in the range it is absolutely terrific and managed to cool my bedroom down from over 90 degrees to a very comfortable 65 in under an hour. Although not silent like my fan I managed to sleep with it on. I can’t recommend Meaco enough. Apart from making this hot weather bearable they also look good. They’re also extremely inexpensive to run.

  3. I have just bought the meaco 1056 fan, so effective and quiet, really was a lifesaver during those couple of days of heatwave. Just ordered the storage bag .

  4. We have a650 air circulator bought on the 16 6 2021 from QVC but the plug does not seem to work can you let me know the cost of a new one please thank you in advance

  5. My son bought this Yesterday ,best nights sleep in the last week ,quiet ,good looking ,best sleeping partner ever 🤣Would highly recommend.

  6. Just bought a 650 fan-mostly for my Campervan as it also runs on USB points/battery packs- its utterly amazing, powerful and soooooo quiet.
Worth every penny despite its higher cost – as I hope its last for many years to come.
Like other person says it would also be great to use on teams meetings as I cant have my normal one run as its tooo loud..

  7. Hello, I’ve ordered a Meaco fan (650) and have a question – are they designed to be used with windows open or closed? If there’s a heatwave, is it better to seal the room with the fan?

  8. I have just bought a Meaco fan! I started off buying a cheaper fan, got it home and realised it was too noisy to have on when working from home doing a TEAMS meeting. I’d seen the Meaco fan in the store and read the claim that it was quiet but didn’t believe it could be worth £120…! I decided to try the Meaco with a view that I’d take it back if it wasn’t amazing. Well, I won’t be taking it back. It is AMAZING!!!!! It is sooo quiet and effective and it’s like having a new friend in the room. All menopausal women NEED one of these!!! I like its quirky design; it seems to have a personality all of its own. Brilliant- who knew a fan could be this good. Thank you. If you want anyone to test out future prototypes count me in!
